06 June, 2024

From 17 to 20 October, the town of Torremolinos will host the 2024 World Triathlon Championship Finals Torremolinos-Andalucía. This event, which has the support of its main sponsor, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport of Junta de Andalucía (the Andalusian Government), the Diputación Provincial of Malaga and the City Council of Torremolinos, will be along with the Olympic and Paralympic Games the most important event of the year worldwide, and will serve to crown the kings and queens of triathlon in its various categories; Elite, U23, Junior, Paratriathlon, Age Groups in Sprint, Standard and Aquabike Standard distances and Mixed Relays (U23/Junior, Paratriathlon and Age Groups).

Torremolinos will be the stage where all the races of the Final will take place, as well as all the key and logistic points of the event (expo, fair, bib collection...), which will have a unique venue. Thus, the town of Torremolinos will host the great stars of international triathlon and also thousands of athletes of the age groups from all over the world, as expressed in the presentation and meeting of the organizing committee of Torremolinos-Andalucía 2024 that has taken place today, less than five months for such an anticipated event, and after the raising of the flag of 'World Triathlon', which symbolizes Torremolinos-Andalucía as the venue for the Grand Final.

From the Junta de Andalucía, Arturo Bernal has pointed out that “Andalusia has demonstrated its strength in the organization of major competitions and offers ideal facilities and weather conditions for sports and this event will once again place the community in the center of international sport”.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport has also stressed that “the Finals of the World Championship Torremolinos-Andalusia will be a first class show, the whole world will look at Torremolinos and will be an incentive for all those young athletes who are starting or for the first time are encouraged to practice a sport as exciting and intense as triathlon.

For his part, the president of the Diputación Provincial of Malaga, Francisco Salado, commented that “the province has a very proven ability to hold such sporting events” and stressed the tourist and economic impact that this competition will generate in Torremolinos and throughout the Costa del Sol.

The mayoress of Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid, also expressed her feelings. "For us it is a very important day. I want to thank all the people who have made it possible. Much of the success of tourism in Torremolinos is due to the relationship between this municipality and sport. Hosting a test of these characteristics, with this level, is undoubtedly a great opportunity for Torremolinos and consolidates our commitment to sports tourism".

This final will be special for Marisol Casado, president of World Triathlon and IOC member. "The week after the World Cup, we will have the electoral congress of World Triathlon. After 16 years as president of the International Federation I will no longer be running, so it will be something historic for me. I am very grateful that my farewell will be here, in my country, and having seen many times how Andalusia is, I know it will be great. I will always keep a very nice memory of it,” said Casado.

And for his part, José Hidalgo, president of the Management Commission of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, said that “it will be a unique World Championship. First of all because it is the World Championship of the reunification of all the Age Group World Championships (Olympic Distance, Sprint and Mixed Relay) after many years. It will also be the World Championships of the re-election of the presidency, so 170 delegations will come to the congress, coming from all corners of the world. And it will also be the most important event that Spain will host in this Olympic year".

Higaldo, explained the reasons. "There will be no sports championship in our country of the dimension of the Final Torremolinos-Andalucía 2024. Neither in the quality of the participants, nor in the number of countries, nor in the number of visitors that a sporting event can attract. In figures, this final will attract more than 4,000 athletes and a total of almost 20,000 people, generating a direct economic impact of more than 20 million euros.
