The presentation of the sustainability strategy for the Final of the 2024 Triathlon World Championship Finals Torremolinos-Andalucía took place this afternoon at the Torremolinos (Málaga) City Hall. Said strategy, driven by the Spanish Triathlon Federation and its movement for the sake of sustainability 'Good Loop', will aim to try to leave a sustainable legacy by integrating social, economic and environmental criteria, to avoid negative impacts and at the same time, align with the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda.
Protecting water as a resource and source of life (avoiding the use of more than 65,000 plastic bottles), fighting against Climate Change (promoting public transport and the use of efficient vehicles), integrating the circular economy (redesign, rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle), promoting sustainable consumption and local economy, contributing to the conversation of marine biodiversity and integrating all people with equity through sport are the main sustainable axes of the World Championship Final.
“We want to turn this great event into a sustainable and environmentally friendly competition. It is the best sporting event that Torremolinos has had in its history and this municipality will benefit in all aspects, but especially in the question of economic impact, taking into account that almost 20,000 people will visit us, with more than 80,000 overnight stays expected. It is expected to generate more than 25 million euros directly on the municipality, generating income in the hospitality industry, transport, trade ...”, said Ramón Alcaide, councilman of environment and sports of the municipality of Torremolinos.
For his part, Saleta González, responsible for sustainability of the Spanish Triathlon Federation explained in detail the entire strategy and wanted to emphasize the importance of this firm commitment of the World Championship. “To talk about sustainability is to reduce the impact of the event within the environment, both in terms of resources and people, and to try to take measures to make it as sustainable as possible. The legacy we are looking for in Torremolinos is that its inhabitants take co-responsibility together with the athletes and all the people who come to the World Championship, and get involved with all the measures we are taking and are going to take.”
